In general variables will be inherited from the parent process.
Beware that for $PATH (? at least this is true for the extra library search
path, $LD_LIBRARY_PATH) on (at least Debian) that is not exported, for security
reasons. If you want to export (at least LD_LIB..) you need to rename it before
starting your term, then rename back.
Maybe not your problem, but it can be a real mystery as to why that won't work
so I thought I'd throw it in there.

note the "profile" ones are intended to be run at login time, the "rc" ones are
intended to be run when a new process is run.
