I know this is OT, but you criticize something I frequently do, and so 
I feel guilty.

I suspect this double "thanks" habit goes way back when people still 
wrote letters. In business correspondence, it was conventional to 
insert the formula into an initial inquiry like, "Thank you for your 
kind consideration." And when the party did in fact respond, you thank 
them again for doing so. 

That is, the two "thanks" serve different purposes. Am I wrong here, 
or just very old fashioned?
