You say that it happens from a maximised xterm - I assume therefore that you don't get the same issue with a non-maximised xterm?

Does the same thing happen with other full screen terminal emulators; gnome-terminal or aterm for example?

I have no idea what is the problem, but this course problem with gvim 
windows:
- maximize an xterm
- run "gvim something.txt"

I obtain a gvim windows that is bigger than my desktop and it is almost 
useless. Did this happen even to you?

Of course, this problem happen only with gvim (not with vi nor vim).
