I think modifying executables in /usr/bin is not a good idea.  Your
system most likely provides mechanism for customization through config
files in /etc or in each user's home dir. Even if this is not the case
or you absolutely need to touch up a file there, your best option
probably would be to copy the file to /usr/local/bin and modify that
copy, letting the original alone and in place. /usr/local generally is
before /usr/bin in user's PATH. 

I suggest to replace the original xinit and start over.
