Did you try to use <Shift> + <left mouse button>
to copy and <Shift> + <middle mouse button> to paste?

I often run Midnight Commander within xterm and whithout
Shift, nothing happens at all (mc grabs mouse commands
for its own needs). Shift + mouse button
just became a habit for me, because I just so often
need to copy and paste between xterm windows...
