If so, and if the cause can be identified I'll take a shot at fixing it.
But probably I've not enough expertise to track it down myself in the sources.

If anyone wants to take a stab at it, I'll be glad to provide sources (or a
pointer).

My version of xv is a slightly modified form of the highly-patched version of
3.10 that's been floating around in the wild for a while (3.10a-jumboFix+Enh
dated 20070520)

I recall experimenting with !UseIconPosition a while back (the "No" version
of that option seems deprecated in 2.6.7) but no help.  At your suggestion
though, I tried it again just now (via FVWM console, not changing it in my
config file) but no help. Still behaves as previously reported.
