I have zero use for anything in the WM that takes up screen space,
no pager, taskbar, or buttons here.

I've always preferred xsysstats.  You probably won't find it in your
distro but you can find it online.  I've hacked mine to also show
uptime.  It tracks CPU, network, disk, etc without being obtrusive.

Just got a 3840x2160 monitor.  It's not infinite, but I'm struggling to
fill it with useful stuff.  I like the onscreen icons, I keep them on
the right under the clock, perf meter, and biff.  Not that I click
them much, (keyboard shortcuts) they just show me what's running

Amen.  Gives me 100% control.
