Thanks to all for replies. 

In reply to Dave: it's all the browsers I have that produce this:
iceweasel, firefox, iceape, lynx. Icewm is version 1.2.30-1 from Debian
Sid.

I tried using 
 prog iceweasel - xterm -e iceweasel but that didn't work either. 

Non-browser programs all run: mutt, xpad, xsane, lyx ...

I also tried starting X with no .xinitrc or .Xdefault but no difference. 
I still think that something must be interfering with Icewm when it
tries to call these browsers. And, as I said, on a desktop running the
same version of Debian and Icewm there are no problems. 

I can't find any way of tracing why these entries fail - strace doesn't
seem to be the answer.
