Here is a python script for volume adjustment with progress bar for multimedia key,

Additionally some nice desktop notification tool are there. Like xfce-notifyd for xfce4, then  NotifyOSD in ubuntu. Unfortunately there is nothing light desktop notification for icewm. Maybe something but I have not found yet.
