What I need is a command line which does  exactly the same as clicking 
on the shutdown button from within IceWM.  Something like this command 
for KDE4
qdbus org.kde.ksmserver /KSMServer org.kde.KSMServerInterface.logout 0 2 2
or perhaps like this one for GNOME :
gnome-session-save --shutdown-dialog
That is, a command which could be used from within a script or a program 
and not requiring any "special" parametrization of the Desktop. I  am 
not sure I fully understand your answer, anyway...
