And yes, that's a somewhat silly convention... I came up with that idea lately, too. Anyhow, I found a way to generate quite good looking xpm images, using Inkscape, saving as bitmap with white background, opening it in gimp, using the magic tool to select the white background, deleting the white background, saving it as xpm, alpha value 5 ... puh The strange thing is that this leads to a better result than just exporting it from inkscape with transparent background and converting it to xpm using gimp with the same alpha values.
