The basic model is dwm-ish, so:

    I physical screens (Xinerama)
view onto
    J virtual workspaces (tags)
grouping
    K windows

the windows are tiled in a number of ways.

Sort of. Not arbitrary.

Yes, it is a variation of dwm's tags. But simpler, not needlessly
complex regex matching (urgh!)
