So despite the name gnome-dock according to the website it doesn't
actually depend on anything Gnome. It does however claim to require a
compositing manager which ion doesn't have.
So I don't think you will have much luck getting it to look right without
one, if you provide a screenshot of what you are seeing there may be
slight things that can be tweaked to make it look better but I don't know
how much.
Also you are aware that ion has (at least for the moment) a dock module,
correct?
