I am moving away from the window maker dockapps too. (Many
reasons for that.) Actually I have migrated already, by,
say, 70-80%. (The remaining percent will be handled soon.)

Who knows xosd^1 ("X On Screen Display library")? I have
started to use the library in conjunction with Perl
(X::Osd - Perl extension to xosd) ... you could use C if
you prefer though it would make less sense (unless you
know C and absolutely not Perl).

One can replace/emulate--in a much more *elegant* [and
consistent] way--window maker dockapps with xosd and
X::Osd.

     1. man xosd - is a library for displaying an
on-screen display (like the one on many TVs) on your X
display.
