Indeed-- most backgrounds don't provide good readability unless you
tint them. Backgrounds are mostly just eyecandy and a waste of time.

However, whenever I feel an urge to have eyecandy (this generally
wears off in a day), I run "urxvt -tr -fg gray +sb". That's the
pseudo-transparency kludge though. Generally "xterm -fg gray -bg
black" is as shiny as you should get.
