So what about configuring your screen to use Ctrl-G instead:

$ cat ~/.screenrc
escape ^G^G
termcapinfo xterm 'hs:ts=\E]2;:fs=\007:ds=\E]2;screen\007'
termcapinfo rxvt 'hs:ts=\E]2;:fs=\007:ds=\E]2;screen\007'
hardstatus string "%H [screen %n%?: %t%?] %h"
