I think I found the problem and it will be an easy fix.

/etc/xdg/openbox/autostart.sh sets DESKTOP_ENV="" before
calling /usr/local/lib/openbox/xdg-autostart.

According to its usage statement, "" (null) is not one of its
acceptable environments.  It recognizes gnome, KDE, XFCE,
etc., and "Old" for legacy environments.  Putting that in
/etc/xdg/openbox/autostart.sh seems to work.

Thanks for being there.  I might not have gotten so lucky!!!
