I don't have a solution for you but why do you set the DISPLAY? Do you run this script from somewhere outside of X-Window? If not (i.e. the script is an indirect descendant of openbox), then DISPLAY is already in your environment and is correct, so by setting it yourself you only risk shooting yourself in the foot. -- Please *no* private copies of mailing list or newsgroup messages.
