Jim and Ian: you are both right with respect of me unwittingly using Gnome applications. When I did "ps-e | grep gnome" I saw more processes than I expected. I have uninstalled polkit-gnome, ibus* (even though there was no process with ibus in the name), Gnome Control Centre and a few others. I am still keeping 3 programs that use Gnome libraries or are affiliated with the Gnome project because I use them a lot: Tomboy (note taking), Gnome Mplayer (to play music inside Seamonkey and Firefox) and Geany (for small source-editing jobs).
