Thanks, that was a big clue. The difference between your settings and mine
is that I have unfocusOnLeave set and you don't. Changing that fixes it and
lets me leave followMouse on too. I find it a bit disconcerting that I can
type while the mouse is on the root window and the text appears in the last
window I was in, but I think I can live with that.

I guess what's happening is that the window pops up, but with all my mouse
focus settings it immediately loses focus, since the mouse isn't over the
popup, it's over the button. And this particular window disappears when it
loses focus.
