ncurses apps launched from demenu lock up Xorg - openbox related?

recap:

starting ncurses cli apps like mc or mocp (moc = music on console) from 
a launcher like dmenu, without explicitely telling it to use a terminal, 
seems to lock up an X-session in a particular way.

one user can reproduce this with a simple openbox session, but not with 
dwm as window manager.

i haven't completed my own troubleshooting yet, but i thought it's time 
to post it here, since it seems to be at least openbox related.
