The patch didn't seem to help.  It's still rather intermittent. It
won't happen for a few hours at a time, and then it will fail
consistently for 5-10 minutes at a time.

Yep, always.  As far as I remember, fvwm2, and the XFCE window manager
all handled it fine as well.
