Ah, okay.

I've been doing things like

"ratpoison -i -c exec"
F3

in .xbindkeysrc

when I could have been doing

definekey top F3 exec

in .ratpoisonrc all along.  Much more natural.

As for what mod2 is...

netbook$ xmodmap
xmodmap:  up to 2 keys per modifier, (keycodes in parentheses):
...
mod2        Num_Lock (0x4d)

I didn't know Num_Lock could be a modifier...
