I have same problems with displaying some UTF-8 characters in my
ratpoison bar (accent for example). I have these issues when I'm using
for example

--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
ratpoison -c "echo ééèèààà"
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---

as well when I'm entering manually those characters directly in my
ratpoisonbar.

I have to add that the xftfont I use for ratpoison have fullsupport for
UTF-8.

Regards,
