Call me old-skool if you wish... :) Sounds familiar. :-) Since the GDM developers IMHO went totally crazy with version 3 of GDM (they even fucked up the .Xauthority location, WTF?), I switched all my X running boxes (except that one Ubuntu) back to good old XDM and I'm happy with it.
