thanks for the replies.  i'm inclined to agree with you.  i would
*definitely* agree if it weren't for the fact that i see this in many
programs.  in addition to R and gnuplot, old, venerable xv(1), for
example, also runs afoul of this.  (ImageMagick's display(1) seems to do
the right thing.)

because of that, i'd suggest trying to prop these defective programs via
some sort of aspect ratio ability.  like i say, i'm not 100%.

ps -- Jérémie, fwiw, i *do* see some use of XSizeHints in
gnuplot-4.4.4/src/gplt_x11.c.  i don't know if it's done in the right
way.  (the code appears the same in 4.6.1, and the result is the same.)
