Thanks for the response. These things are never too late.

Since my original mail, I've been paying quite close attention. Indeed,
there are a couple dialogs I've seen where this happens to me. I wonder if
the goal shouldn't be to fix ratpoison to do this maximize at the end of
all window operations before the XSync. I suspect, without having measured
yet, that the cost would be negligible as long as it doesn't incur an
additional server round-trip.
