I just double checked, and I'm running:

$ /usr/bin/ratpoison -v
ratpoison 1.4.8 (built Oct 10 2014 10:02:03)
Copyright (C) 2000-2008 Shawn Betts

Debian package version is 1.4.8-1

I have a ~/.ratpoisonrc with this content:

# http://box.matto.nl/ratpoison_nmapplet.html
unmanage panel
set padding 0 0 0 5

exec /usr/bin/rpws init 3 -k

I think this issue would be quite easy to reproduce at your end, just
download Firefox nightly for Linux (I'm using 64-bit version) and try
to create a new tab using Ctrl+T t.
Thanks a lot.
m.
