trouble with a variable

Hi. You guys are gonna be tired of me soon!

I have a variable that I'm not sure how to declare. The variable is $letter and I need it to play sound files, A through Z. Here's a copy of one of the if statements. Do I need to dim the variable as an integer?

if $letter = 1 then
$voice = $device.OpenSound("a.wav",true)
$voice.play()
EndIf
