Counting array elements

Greetings all,

  I cannot seem to find any notes to the effect so I will go ahead and
ask the question.  I have an array which I am merging with another
array.  What is the easiest way to count the number of items in the
array WITHOUT changing that array (I realize I could sort it and then
just get the max index but I do not want to alter the order of the data.
