Background: I am writing an application-extension for an existing program which loads a plain Windows DLL at runtime. The DLL is coded in unmanaged C++. It makes calls to C# code via COM-registered classes. In addition I have an unmanaged C++-based COM DLL which is used to call into C# and call into the main DLL, and this is used by C# as a relay to send calls back into the application via the main DLL. All the above is coded with Visual Studio 2003. When I deploy my application, I use regsvr32 on the COM/C++ DLL, and regasm /codebase on the C# DLL. The C# code is not strongly named, but I must use /codebase because the application directory is different from the DLL directories. Anyhow, I feel that the whole thing is a fragile mess relative to installation issues, and I want to change something so things are less fragile and less messy. Maybe using managed C++ somewhere would help, but I don't know how. Maybe I can eliminate COM somewhere, but I don't really know about that. I really don't have a clue where to start, and I don't want to take on a huge task of rewriting stuff to make the problem go away, but I do want to take on a manageable task of changing stuff to make the system less messy.
