listview focal rect

I am using the VS ListView control (VS2005) with full row select.  When
I click on a row, the highlight bar moves to the item clicked -just as I
want.  When I click on empty space in the control, the highlight bar
disappears (surprisingly, several third party extensions of this control
- Infragistics, ComponentOne - don't behave this way , ie, you can't
click on the control not on an item and have the highlight disappear).

 

Anyway, when I do click on the empty space in the control and the
highlight disappears, there is still a light focal rect (seemingly)
around the last clicked choice.  Is there anyway to just remove this
light focal rect?
