Incorrect. What matters is how much the employer thinks you will want.
I recently applied online for a position where I met all the requirements
and the employer wanted 3 - 5 years experience and you had to either
specify a minimum/expected salary or give your salary history. I stated
what I was making on a 1099 basis on my last contract, which, after you
factored in the self-employment tax, cost of my own insurance, worker's
comp, etc., was less than I was making at my last full-time job. I received
an email by mistake indicating that my salary was too high. They had no way
of knowing how much I would be willing to accept. I have taken lower paying
jobs over higher paying ones because I felt I was a better fit in the lower
paying ones. In this case, they lost out on a good employee because they
weren't thinking beyond the next few months.
