I for my part think recruiters already realize the diminishing value of
their services in IT - especially of those recruiting companies where
candidate selection and evaluation is done by HR people, not by =
engineers.
(Which would be - what - 90% of them all? )

And the very tone of the original recruiter from which this discussion
started - "you won't get very far", "welcome to my world of recruiting", =
and
calls to calm down in a private email to me - shows they are probably =
quite
nervous themselves.

Which reminds me that every market niche will inevitably settle down =
after
some time.  We've seen the boom in salaries - including for developers =
who
couldn't tell the practical difference between a string and an int =
variable,
or DB 'architects' whose knowledge of locking started and finished with
reciting the what ACID means.  Many of these people are now flipping
hamburgers.

Suits me fine -- it is high time the market started to understand that
software development is a profession requiring lots of training, lots of
energy and personal commitment.  It is not going to be overtaken by
general-purpose business people in suits just like the practice of law =
is
controlled by lawyers. (Although, admittedly, lawyers have been known to
wear suits on occasion)

I agree. I have hired two people in the passed two months and its really =
not
that difficult to find qualified people. All you need to do is post to a =
few
of the lists out there and be clear on what you are looking for. Sure =
you
will get some who are not qualified (some what so ever), but these are
usually obvious by searching the resume for key words and based on that =
you
will know immediately.  I also google people quite often, which usually
provides the "maker or beaker" decision.  For me personally, I would =
rather
spend a few extra minutes up front to avoid some times ludicrous markups
that recruiters would add onto it. This is also necessary sometimes when
getting resumes from recruiters.  I think you also get better service =
when
going direct because the developer has more incentive to make a better
impression.

Lastly, it always brightens my day when I get a call from a recruiter =
trying
to fill a position doing "Sequel" and ASP.Net programming and they have =
no
clue that asp.net is not a programming language, and are clueless on =
what
"Sequal" is.

I think recruiters need to realize that these days they are not as =
valuable
as they used to be.  Sure there are some big companies that are set in =
there
ways and won't do business unless its through one of their "preferred
vendors" but being a consultant working for one of these at one point, =
they
really aren't getting much other then some insurance which anyone can =
get
these days.
