Check the mx record of the server and try to ask the server if the user exists (not sure about the command)... but since spam has become so prevalent most email servers don't allow/support this anymore. And you wouldn't be sure the user is actually reading the email. This is the reason Ebay/amazon etc. use the double opt-in method

No, this isn't applicable. I don't want to send out any email. I just want
to check if the provided email address does exist or not.
How can I do that?
