How do they support codebehind then? In the content page I have a page
directive which references the master page and does not support a
Codebehind attribute. A second page directive is not allowed. And when I
double click a button control in the content page the server side
handling method is generated in the .aspx file.

If you are referring to pages that contain ContentPlaceholder control
istances then afaik no, it isn't correct.
