Re: SDI interface and modal forms

I am afraid I may have confused some of you a bit with my initial example, that I tried to simplify for the sake of this discussion.

The situation is a follows:
The application employs a mix of an SDI and an MDI interface. It is SDI in the sense that it consists of several "independent" windows that have their own item on the windows task bar etc. Each of these SDI-windows is an MDI container, that may contain other MDI child forms. The application may have 1 to N open SDI forms that are MDI containers/parents.

The problem arises when the user opens a modal dialog in one of the open forms, because this causes the other SDI windows/MDI containers to be blocked as well, even though the user may press ALT+TAB to bring them to front.

Did that make any sense at all?

Hi Eyvind

Your opening question said you were doing this with Single Document Forms
which I assumed were standalone .exe's, that you cycle through via the
system Alt+Tab command.  E.g. SDI.

With an MDI model it is the one application container with multiple child
forms that you cycle through with Ctrl+Tab.  I don't think an MDI container
would let the user leave a form with a modal dialog open.
