Other things I have tried: - search the code of XFire for 'sleep', 'wait' and 'notify'. The only thing I found was one instance of 'sleep' which was in a client-side class. I put a breakpoint there but this code is never reached in my client application. - search the code of XFire for 'limit', 'maximum', 'throtl' and 'throughput', but nothing useful turned up. - I suddenly realized that because of the heavy use of XML either side of the connection might be attempting to load DTDs or schemas from the web. I enabled debug logging but there is no reference to a DTD or a schema in either the request or the respone. I also checked the network traffic over my UTP connection with both Microsoft Network Monitor and Wireshark, but there were no outgoing HTTP and DNS requests.
