Actually, I would love to try an OODBMS. The only problem is that, short
of changing employers, I don't expect to work on anything new for a good
long while.

The biggest reasons why I went with Derby + Hibernate are:

1. We are resource poor and they are free.

2. Derby, being the open reincarnation of Cloudscape, has something of a
track record and is, therefore, a lower risk technology.

3. Derby's embedded mode greatly simplifies configuration and installation.

Now I have been working on some independent research on the side and I
would love to consider an OODBMS for that project. Are there any that
are free, have proven track records with large-scale data sets and have
an embedded mode?
