Optional Variant

I have been very successful at automating PowerPoint using Jawin by using
the stubs generated by jawinGenUI.  I am trying to do the same with Excel
now but am running into a few hurdles.  I think all my problems would be
solved if I could just figure out how to pass a Variant equivalent to
Microsoft's "Optional Variant".  Any advice would be appreciated.
