Jawin refactoring & improvements

I'm trying to come up with a good topic for my master's thesis in Software
Engineering (starting sometime in Sept 2005).  My idea is to take an open
source project and to either re-work and improve a part of it (if needed),
add needed or missing functionality, etc. Now, since I had learned a
little about Jawin, I thought it might be a good match since I remember
reading that the developers were considering a significant refactoring of
parts of Jawin. I would be interested to hear ideas of what might be a
decent (not too small, not too wide) scope project within Jawin that I
could take on and contribute back to the project, what Jawin needs done,
etc.
