Determining if an application is running

I am using jawin to run microsoft word.  Is there a way to determine if
word is already running?  The problem is that when I try to call word and
it is already running, it will come up and allow me to edit the document
but it will lock up when I try to save the document.  I think it has to do
with the ownership of the application if that makes any sense.
