Have you seen the RAX/RCC proposal in SVG 1.2, and partly implemented in 
the new Adobe viewer... It is a way to bind low-level svg elements to 
any xml content.  The examples being given a lot lately is pie charts... 
using xml for the pie chart mechanisms, and JavaScript to bind events 
and svg primitives like paths and fills to the xml syntax.
