It is true that the reach of Flash is almost the same as DOM+javascript.
It is also true that while Flash is proprietary, so are most browsers.

One strike against it is that the development environment is expensive
($699 for flash mx pro).

Also, in the longer run, I'm more interested it focusing my understanding
on SVG+SMIL than on the API of a single commercial product.

That said, I think it would be interesting to have a wrapper/driver
for some Flash implementations of some functionality.
But I would want the open source js library to be "on top", not flash
"on top".

For example, IE supports an activex calendar control; it might be nice
to offer that in the library, when the environment is running on IE.
Similarly for exposing the flash mx calendar control.
That is for example roughly our approach to the xmlhttprequest objects
available in different environments.

Also, there are still a lot of cases where there is use for some js utilities
without wanting to fire up a flash plug-in.
