Turtle like speeds connecting to db across network

Hi all,

   Just kind of a general question. I had my database on my development
computer, recently I moved it to a network drive. This slowed my
application down by at least a factor of ten. Is this normal? Are there any
optimization techniques out there which aren't general knowledge? Best
practice kind of things when connecting across a network.
