I would suggest using the Service Components and see what happens.  I
vaguely remember something about updates/add not being supported by the
driver and service components must be used.  Bob Beuchamin (did I spell that
right?) would be a great resource for this.

I made some progress on this problem.

I have changed my code so as to use immediate update mode.
Now, I get a more explicit error message from the provider.
It says:

> unable to insert NULL into "MYTABLE"."A"

Well, that is weird, since I'm not actually inserting
a null value. My code creates a column accessor with
bounded value, status and length parts for two unsigned long
numeric values.

I happened *not* to set the correct length in the accessor
buffer, and that was what caused the error.
