Re: Distributed NUnit?

It's in our roadmap. Our plan is to initially support what might be called
"static distribution" - that is,
the tests have to already be on the machines that run them before starting
NUnit. This is relatively
easy to do and will get allow folks to spread load across a known set of
machies.
 
We will also be distributing pNUnit with NUnit 2.5, giving folks a chance to
define some level of
interaction between tests on distributed machines.
 
The next step, of course, is for NUnit to dynamically distribute tests to a
number of machines as
you have suggested. That won't happen till the 3.0 release. Several people
have worke on
distribution mechanisms like you describe and I imagine one of them will be
the basis for
what we do around this in 3.0. If you would like to get involved in
discussions of what will
be added to 3.0, I suggest joining the nunitv3 list on google groups.

So this may sound like a goofy question, but are there any tools out there
that let you distribute the load of NUnit?

Our testing is getting out of control... we have so many tests that take a
lot of time that it takes about 50 minutes to run our entire test suite.  I
know that from a philisophical perspective, the answer is "Make your tests
run faster".  That solution is easier said than done.

So, we had this funny idea that it would be nice to offload testing to idle
machines... kind of like SETI@Home.  If the machine is idle, it runs the
tests and reports the results back to the originator.

Has anyone already done anything like this?

If we were to go about doing it, would we just use the NUnit runner classes
and write our own distribution service?  Or is there a plug-in interface
that it would make more sense to add it to?

Any thoughts on this?
