Subject: RE: [Nunit-users] Shadow Copy Setting

Hi Mike,

1. NUnit uses shadow copy by default because it allows you to recompile
an assembly while it is loaded. Without using a copy,

Visual Studio would ot be able to modify the assembly.

2. IMO, there is no reason to turn it off in the gui that is
sufficiently good to outweigh the above problem. For some programs that
are poorly written (this will annoy some folks) there is a problem that
they don't run correctly when shadow-copied. My choice would generally
be to fix the program, but occasionally the culprit is some third-party
assembly that cannot be changed. There's no problem with turning it off
in the console, btw, and we may stop using it in the console runner in a
future release.

3. No.

I'd say that the most likely explanation for your situation is that some
folks turned off shadow copy on particular machines at some time in the
past. It is a persistent setting.

Charlie

	Subject: [Nunit-users] Shadow Copy Setting

	Charlie,

We've been having some issues on some developer workstations
that seem to relate to the shadow copy setting in 2.4.7. On most
systems it is in its default state (on), while on others it has been
turned off.

	1. Why does NUnit make a shadow copy by default? (I think
I know the answer, but I'd like to hear one anyway ...)

	2. What are the relative merits having shadow copy on/off?
Why would you want to turn the shadow copy off?

	3. Are there any scenarios that you are aware of that
would cause NUnit in either the installation process or at runtime to
automatically turn off the shadow copy.
