My first question would be, why abandon Windows XP just because MS no longer "supports" it.

I have machines that have been running happily on XP for years with no updates and they work fine. As long as you have hardware to run it, XP will be a competitive OS for the vast majority of people for the indefinite future. Unless you have a compelling reason to upgrade other than loss of MS support, I would consider staying with XP.

Having said that, you can install Ecco quite easily on Windows 8 using a number of different free installers or methods. It's not necessary to buy anything although some people choose to go that route. As this is a controversial topic and I am currently posting on one side of the track, I will leave the full answer to others.

The good news is Ecco runs just fine on Windows 8. :)
