One-time Download?

I had downloaded prior versions of Ecco Pro in the past as freeware, and am now trying to install it on my 64 bit Windows 8.1 PC.  I see that I can do this by becoming a subscriber for $20/year.  I don't mind paying the $20, but I only use basic features of the software and don't expect to require support or enhancements.  Is there any problem if I subscribe, then at some point before year 2 cancel my subscription?  Or will Ecco stop working after I cancel my subscription?
